Jean Brehmer Swain, a granddaughter of Philip H. Brehmer, recounts in a “Band of Brothers” the lives of Philip, Louis and Bertram Brehmer, important members of the Rutland community in the late 19th and early 20th Century.
The sons of a German immigrant and a Pennsylvania Dutch woman, the brothers developed an early interest both in music and jewelry, which ultimately led to the opening of stores offering both products.
The jewelry business would eventually be abandoned but the music business would remain active in a variety of locations.
The article is illustrated with pictures of Rutland scenes, and personal family photographs taken by Louis who became a professional photographer. His publications of photography books are listed separately, as is a brief list of sheet music published by Phil Brehmer.
